Creating a Leadership Team at a Premier Defence Consultancy

Background

SCS is a leading defence and security consultancy, providing independent expert advice to defence and private sector customers in the UK and internationally.

Its main client is the UK MoD and its agencies; other clients include NATO, major defence contractors, UK Government Departments and a range of blue-chip organisations outside the defence sector.

The Task

SCS's aim is to continue to grow the defence business, while expanding internationally and further into the private sector.

To achieve this, SCS wanted to strengthen their leadership team through key strategic appointments. Until then SCS executives were normally recruited from a purely military background. Kilpatrick were approached because of their track record of success in executive search both in the defence and private sectors. The requirements were for a Director of Complex Systems, a Director of Operational Training and CIS Support, and a Director of Air Systems.

What we Did

We devised search campaigns which involved targeting high calibre individuals with strong commercial as well as relevant military/technical backgrounds and connections and a demonstrable record of achievement. The challenge was the shortage of people who could meet this demanding specification and were willing and able to make the transition.

The Outcome

Having conducted thorough search which involved use of our extensive personal networks as well as research across several sectors, shortlists were presented to SCS who were very pleased with the quality of background and skills the candidates offered. Front runners emerged with particularly relevant experience, and we played a key role in ensuring the successful appointments of Mike Rowe, Steve Townsend and Mark Willis. All three have established themselves as key members of the management team and are contributing to the ongoing transformation of SCS into a highly successful consultancy business.
