Building a Management Team for a Leading Finnish Ground Engineering Company

Background

Uretek is a global group of contractors specialised in geopolymer technology for ground engineering. Uretek has pioneered the most advanced and accurate systems for concrete slab lifting and stabilisation and a non-disruptive alternative to conventional underpinning to solve foundation subsidence problems.

The Uretek method was invented in Finland and today the business operates a network of licensed contractors in over 50 countries and wholly-owned subsidiaries in Europe. More than 100,000 ground engineering projects have been successfully completed using Uretek's proprietary technology.

The Challenge

Following the acquisition of the UK licensee, Uretek's International Licensing Director, Roland Caldbeck, transferred from Finland to take on the role of Managing Director UK. He identified the need to strengthen the management team through the external appointment of three key executives, Sales Director, Head of Finance and Operations Manager. Kilpatrick were chosen to handle this recruitment through their partnership with the Finnish recruiter Personnel Group who support Uretek in Finland, knowledge of the construction sector, and experience of recruiting for Nordic clients scaling up operations in the UK.

We needed to attract professional managers with relevant experience who could contribute to the company's growth and play key roles as members of the management team.

The Solution

Extensive searches were conducted across the UK. For the Operations Manager targets were companies providing relevant technical services/solutions to the construction industry, and managers working in construction contracting. To find the Sales Director and Head of Finance we cast the net further wide. For all three searches we used our extensive personal networks including existing known key players within the industry. This was supported by desk research and some targeted advertising. The challenge was attracting suitable candidates to a company which while well regarded as a leader in ground engineering, did not have such a high profile as an employer in the wider marketplace.

The Outcome

After thorough search and in-depth discussions and interviewing by us, shortlists of suitably qualified and experienced candidates were presented to Uretek. We then advised them on their own programme of interviewing and assessment which we participated in. The Kilpatrick team confirmed all meetings and ensured that candidates were fully briefed beforehand and de-briefed afterwards. Uretek were pleased to be able to identify front runners. However it was not all plain sailing. A Sales Director was identified and offered to, who after protracted negotiations withdrew from the process. We had to start again and through widening the search found another of equivalent calibre. We played a key role in ensuring the acceptance of the offers for all three positions and all parties are very happy with the appointments.
