Background
BPEC is a nationally renowned training and certification organisation, created in 1991 when the plumbing industry came out of scope of the CITB. It is dedicated to raising the skills of those working in the building services sector and comprises three companies: a registered charity, a provider of training materials and a certification service.
The Challenge
The Board of BPEC had directors nominated by the two plumbing trading associations operating in the UK, APHC and SNIPEF. Until now the Chair had been held alternately by a Director of APHC and SNIPEF. In order to provide clearer strategic vision and direction BPEC decided to appoint its first Independent Chair.
The Solution
We devised a recruitment campaign which involved targeting high calibre individuals with strong commercial backgrounds and a demonstrable record of achievement. The challenge was the breadth of the potential target area; we were aiming for people with a wide variety of business backgrounds, not necessarily from the building services or training sectors.
The Outcome
Having conducted a thorough search which involved use of our extensive personal networks as well as desk research across a number of industry sectors, a shortlist of three was presented to the Board who were very pleased with the quality and variety of experience the candidates offered. A front runner emerged with particularly relevant business experience, and we played a key role in ensuring the successful appointment. We have kept in touch with the client and the new Chair who has already made a significant impact on BPEC.
