Director, Airworthiness - Defence Consultancy

A leading defence consultancy has retained us to conduct a search for an exceptional airworthiness leader to develop and expand the business within and beyond the defence sector.


This leading independent consultancy provides a range of technical services including consultancy, technical support, training, managed services and information services, primarily, but not exclusively, for the defence and security sectors.  Its main client is the UK MoD and its agencies; other clients include NATO, major defence contractors, other UK Government Departments and a range of blue-chip non-defence businesses. The company aims to continue expanding internationally and further into the private sector. 


Due to significant growth in the military airworthiness business, a need has arisen to appoint a Director - Airworthiness who will deliver and develop airworthiness and Independent Technical Evaluation (ITE) contracts and be responsible for identifying and developing new opportunities for the business area both within and beyond the defence sector. The role will involve delivery, business management and business development and the jobholder will lead a core team of 2 Business Managers and up to 20 associates from time to time on a project basis. 

This newly created role offers an exceptional airworthiness professional the chance to lead this important capability with the scope to exploit exciting and innovative opportunities both within and beyond the defence sector. 


Reporting to the Managing Director, as a member of the Executive team, the Director Airworthiness will be responsible for managing and continually developing the Airworthiness Division and its associated capabilities to meet or exceed financial targets. This will involve ensuring that all projects/programmes achieve planned profit and customer satisfaction, identifying and developing new opportunities for diversifying the business, contributing to the strategic direction and management of the company and providing technical governance of airworthiness and ITE capability.  He/she will develop the Airworthiness Division business plan and input to the wider strategic company plan.


The preferred candidate will be a Chartered Engineer in a relevant discipline and ideally a member of the RAeS. He/she will be qualified as an advanced practitioner in PRINCE2 or APMP. Experienced in the MOD Air domain, he/she will have an in depth knowledge of airworthiness and be used to managing large/complex projects or multiple small to medium projects. He/she will be familiar with developing contract business including considerable experience of negotiating contracts of up to £5m. Personal attributes will include strong communication and presentation skills, enthusiasm, strategic thinking, proven experience in project/programme management, and knowledge of commercial, legal and risk management
